Photographing a wedding at Fain Viejo always feels a little like coming home. I’ve photographed weddings here many times over the years, and by now it’s one of those places I know almost by heart. Every time I come back, I feel a little bit like one of the family. I know the people, the different spaces, how a wedding flows here and how the light changes throughout the day.
That familiarity makes photographing a wedding at Fain Viejo very special for me. I don’t arrive wondering where things are going to happen or looking for photographs. I can simply concentrate on the people and what is happening around me, which is exactly how I like to work.
Fain Viejo is just outside Arcos de la Frontera, in Cádiz, surrounded by countryside and far enough away from everything to feel completely private. It has that relaxed, lived-in feeling that is difficult to manufacture in a wedding venue. It’s beautiful, of course, but what I like most is that it never feels too polished or impersonal.
What a wedding at Fain Viejo feels like
One of the things I love about Fain Viejo is how naturally people move through the different spaces during a wedding. There are gardens, fruit trees, vineyards and plenty of corners where guests can wander, talk and spend time together without everything feeling too structured.
And then there are all those little things that give the place its personality. The peacocks wandering around, the donkeys, the olive trees, the wine, olive oil and homemade products from the finca… They might seem like small details, but together they make Fain Viejo feel like a real Andalusian home rather than simply a venue created for weddings.
From a photographer’s point of view, that makes a huge difference. I work in a very documentary way, so I’m always looking for real moments rather than creating situations for the camera. Fain Viejo gives people space to relax and forget about being photographed, and that is usually when the photographs I care about most happen.
Paul and Markus: a real wedding at Fain Viejo
Paul and Markus travelled from Germany to celebrate their wedding here, surrounded by the people closest to them.
Their wedding is a good example of why I enjoy photographing celebrations at Fain Viejo so much. It felt intimate and personal, with plenty of time for people to be together rather than rushing from one part of the day to another.
We also went to Molino Santa Ana in Arcos de la Frontera for some photographs. I don’t usually want to take couples away from their guests for very long, but having Arcos so close gives us the possibility of using its streets and architecture without turning the wedding into a long photo session.
For me, the photographs from a wedding like this aren’t really about showing how beautiful Fain Viejo is. They’re about remembering what it felt like to be there.
Photographing weddings at Fain Viejo
After photographing weddings here so many times, I know how different Fain Viejo can look and feel depending on the season, the time of day and the kind of celebration a couple is planning.
I know how the light changes throughout the day, which spaces become particularly beautiful later in the afternoon and, more importantly, when it is better simply to leave things alone and let the wedding happen.
That is probably the biggest advantage of knowing a venue this well. I don’t need to spend the day thinking about locations or backgrounds. I can concentrate on what really matters to me: people, gestures, conversations, laughter and all the little things happening away from the obvious moments.
This is also why my documentary approach to wedding photography works so naturally at Fain Viejo. I don’t want couples to spend their wedding following me around for photographs. I prefer to observe, anticipate what is happening and let people enjoy the day. Of course, we’ll make a few portraits when the light is right, but most of the photographs happen without any direction from me.
I also photograph weddings using both digital and analogue cameras, and Fain Viejo is one of those places where I particularly enjoy shooting film. The warm Andalusian light, the greens of the gardens, the old walls and the slightly imperfect character of the finca translate beautifully to analogue photography.
Film has a different rhythm too. It makes me slow down, choose the moment and accept a little unpredictability, which fits perfectly with the way I like to photograph weddings.
After more than 18 years photographing weddings, I still find something different every time I return to Fain Viejo. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I enjoy coming back so much.
Planning a wedding at Fain Viejo
Fain Viejo works particularly well for couples who want to celebrate in the Andalusian countryside while still being close to Arcos de la Frontera. The privacy of the finca means the wedding can feel completely removed from everything outside it, while guests can stay nearby and discover one of the most beautiful white towns in Cádiz.
